Given that the hike is 9 miles round trip, we set out from Leavenworth, Washington, at 2 am to reach the lake by sunrise. I had never started a hike in an unfamiliar location in the middle of the night before. Sure, I have lived in the San Juan Mountains for years with numerous mountain and alpine lake hikes, but this was my first middle-of-the-night start.
With a sky full of stars, the shadows of the tree lines, and the eerie quiet of nature, we flipped on our headlamps to light our trail. The bride and groom were avid hikers, but the trail wasn’t for inexperienced hikers. With an almost 2500 ft vertical climb and 30 pounds of camera equipment on my back, I even questioned my readiness.
I don’t like to back down from a challenge, so there wasn’t anything stopping me at that point. Colchuck Lake is one of the most breathtaking locations near Leavenworth and an absolutely beautiful choice for a sunrise elopement. The goal was simple: arrive before sunrise, witness the first light spilling over the Enchantments, and create timeless photographs that captured not only how their day looked but how it felt.

Reaching the lake before dawn means allowing enough time to hike safely while arriving early enough to settle in before the first colors appear in the sky. As we reached the shoreline, the first light was starting to peak it’s head up. The silhouettes of Dragontail Peak and Colchuck Peak emerged against the horizon while the lake transformed from black to deep sapphire blue. The first rays of sunlight reached the mountain peaks. Golden light spilled across the granite cliffs, reflected perfectly across the turquoise water, and illuminated the couple standing together in complete silence. Moments like these simply can’t be recreated.
An Intimate Ceremony with Just the Bride and Groom
After we reached the top, the bride and groom got ready in their wedding attire, and had their first look moment on top of a rock overlooking the lake. There were no rows of chairs. No elaborate decorations. No timeline packed with obligations. Just the bride and the groom, their handwritten vows, and one of the most beautiful backdrops in the Pacific Northwest. They laughed through happy tears, paused to admire the view, and promised forever with the mountains standing witness. With a hand fasting and exchange of rings to seal their love and promises to each other, the world seem to stand still for just a moment.
